David's Trek 5500

David's Trek 5500

Back in 2000, my dad gave me my first road bike, a used Trek 5200. That bike kick started my love for cycling.

Fast forward to 2016 and my 5200 is long gone and my father has passed away. I had spent the best portion of four years digging after a 5200 or 5500 that was the right size. Low and behold, I stumble across a mint condition 1999 Trek Team USPS, all original, built up with Dura Ace 7700 and time-correct Mavics. I was riding it a few days after I first saw it.

A few months down the line I decide to bring it up to speed. My Canyon CF SLX which had been built to sub-6 KG is stripped to the frame and fork, and the Trek is brought into the 21st century.

With my climbing wheels, it is a lively bike with excellent stability and stiff bottom bracket. Stick on the Zipp 808s and it just goes.

A mix of retro and modern components, this bike is a real head turner.
This Trek brings me back to my early days cycling, it’s a tribute to my dad and to how he always supported me and just makes me smile.
